THE CROW’S
NEST--------------
January 17, 2008
Years ago when we left home
during the winter we always
took extra outerwear due to
possible inclement weather.
In this electronic driven
age, along with the
clothing, Chuck and I make
sure we have the cell phone,
the Tom-Tom, my laptop (just
in case it’s needed) and of
course, my IPod. The car
becomes “home central”. Our
cell phone is hooked up to
Bluetooth so we converse
with callers through our
steering wheel. We listen
to music or watch movies by
plugging my IPod into the
car’s electrical system and
the Tom-Tom will assuredly
get us where we want to go.
Of course the trip never
begins until I use the
remote starter to warm the
car before leaving the
garage. Re-reading this
makes me very aware how easy
it is to become overly
spoiled and a slave to all
of the high tech gadgets
available.
A beautiful memorial
service was held last Friday
evening at Trinity Lutheran
for Luann Ashpole. Pastor
Christopher had a wonderful
message for everyone who
attended. The church was
filled to the brim with
people who cared for Luann,
Steve and family and wanted
to express their love,
thoughts and condolences.
It sometimes is hard to
understand why this happened
to someone so young and full
of life. A funeral mass was
held Saturday morning in
Munich. Again, we offer our
sincere sympathy and love to
the family of Luann.
It seems like our January
thaw is over. We have had
some very cold weather and
more is on the way for the
next few days. Predictions
have us at minus 25 degrees
by Saturday with no relief
until into next week. It is
a good time to keep the
fireplace lit.
The first page I turn to
when we receive our Reader’s
Digest is the “Word Power”
page. The February issue
deals with words pertaining
to love and romance. One of
the words listed was
shivaree. I had not
thought about that word for
years. The explanation
given in Reader’s Digest
was: loud music played as a
joke outside a newlywed
couple’s window. That
brought me to remembering
years ago all the
“Julebakkers” that used to
come to our farm home during
the Christmas season. It
would be so exciting and so
scary all at once.
Julebakking is a Norwegian
custom (I think) of dressing
in costume, going to
people’s homes where they
hopefully would not be
identified and then given
candy, apples, oranges,
etc. David & Loretta, Ruth
& Greg, Orlando & his
sister, Cora and Chuck & I
went Julebakking maybe 30
years ago. To this day I
remember how much fun we
had!
Plans are in the final stage
for a memorial at the site
of Odalen Lutheran Church.
An 80 foot high cross will
be erected in memory of, and
as a testament to the faith
of the pioneers and the
people who worshiped there
down through the years. The
cross seemed a fitting
tribute as the steeple of
Odalen was a landmark that
could be seen for miles.
Once again there will be a
reflection of beauty in
Haug’s Lake. Other
“interest points” will also
be at the site.
Congratulations to Shauna
Johnson on her upcoming
marriage January 30th.
Sam and Debbi, along with 15
family members and friends
will be going to Las Vegas
for the wedding. I am sure
they will have a very fun
time being together on such
a happy occasion.
Thank you, Brandon, for
checking on the website.
I’m glad you keep your
mother on her toes!!!
Also, thanks Irma G. in
Fordville for reading the
website. I am glad you
enjoy it. Have a great
day!
