 The Crow's Nest

THE CROW’S NEST---------------February 6, 2008

I woke up this morning at 3:30 AM (a long standing tradition from childhood where sleep was a waste of time).  I turned the television on to learn that “Super Tuesday” had developed into “Enough Politics Wednesday”.  All the cable channels were “up and at’em” analyzing all the votes that took place yesterday.  Each network had different charts and exit polls and whatever other methods they could use to make sure the general public knew exactly what we did by placing our vote.  Six months ago I thought this was all very interesting---today I am tired of it.  Maybe that’s just me!

I subscribe to the Divide County Journal out of Crosby, ND.  It is a weekly newspaper with many good articles.  A couple of weeks ago one of the lead stories was about nicknames.  That got me thinking about all the nicknames that have called Edinburg home.  Nicknames were plentiful during my dad’s era.  Some were:  Bum, Beans and Tuffy Mandt, Goof and Pickle Nygard, Cream Puff Rustan, Bones Odne, Guts Sondreson, Hoot, Huskey and Sonny Johnson, Sonny Evenson, Red Johnson and others I am sure.  In my era there was Big Red Peterson, Bughouse Rustan, Weasel Brevik, Rat and Little Rat Windingland and Mouse Anderson.  Re-reading this list is rather appalling as some of the names were just terrible.  Today I can only think of 2 nicknames in Edinburg.  That would be Bongo Sondeland and Pudge Langerud.  Now, those are quite nice nicknames.  O yes, years back we also had “Something and Nothing”.  Girls were not really included in the “wonderful world of nicknames”.  I wonder why?

We have been having some rather nasty cold weather lately.  It seems the thermometer registers minus degrees more than plus degrees.  No wonder Bud and Lynette Langerud decided to head south for a few days.  They flew to Las Vegas and then Lynette said they would just play it by ear!  Thomas and Katie Hall and Fred and Dorothy Hall are enjoying the sun, sand and warmth of Cabul, Mexico.  I know they all will have a fun time, but will be ready to return to help with our Community Brunch!  There is more about that on the Events Page.  Check it out!!!

I believe the National Bird Count is to be held February 15th – 18th.  I keep looking at our feeders wishing I would have a cardinal come and visit.  The downey and hairy woodpeckers really enjoy the suet while the finches and the redpoles feast on niger seed.  Our daughter, Kris who lives in Minot said she had a yard full of robins last week.

Today is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.  For me it is a time of reflection and how I want to live my life this coming year.

Condolences go to the family of Mickey Lee.  Mickey’s funeral was last Friday.  He was only 66 years old.  Glenna plans to stay with her mom until Easter.  After the funeral this man walked up to me and said “Hi, Rita”.  I had NO clue.  It was Darrell Troftgruben.  What fun to see him.  He always was the life of the party at Johnson’s Food Store when he was growing up in Edinburg.  He said he lives in Fargo.

Sara Sorbo is again having a great year playing basketball for Concordia.  Judy and Allen were down in the cities last weekend to watch her play.  I just wish we would get more coverage.  Sara is one of a kind.

Have a great day and we will visit later.

 Things I've Learned:

That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, you are hooked for life.

That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.
