THE CROW’S NEST---------------------June 18, 2006

Wind, wind, wind---north wind, south wind, east wind, west wind---well, not east wind, but wind everywhere.  We have had lots of wind this spring, but the wind this morning is not just a breeze, but a hurricane force of wind.  I can feel Brother Dave shaking his head and saying, “Rita, you are embellishing”!  It was not exactly fun out walking early this morning.  It was downright eerie!  There is not a lot of activity around town at 5:45 on a Sunday morning.  I was walking down by the elevators and the wind was whipping around the grain bins.  I turned many times to see who was following me as the noise from the wind was frightening.  My heartbeat raced until I was back close to home.  Hopefully tomorrow will be a calmer day.

We had our state wide primary this past Tuesday.  Edinburg had 109 votes cast.  The city of Edinburg, Tiber Township, Lampton Township and Golden Township vote at the Community Center.  Chris Vargeson ran unopposed for Mayor.  TJ Hall ran for a City Council seat.  Congratulations to both of them.  Chuck decided that 2 terms as mayor was enough and than someone else should enjoy the position.  Chris will be a great mayor for Edinburg.

With summer comes travel for some of the residents.  Jan Nygard and daughter Stacie and Cathy Nordquist and daughter Melanie just returned from New York City.  They said they had a wonderful time.  I know they were in the crowd at the “Today Show”.  Many locals saw the sign that said “Edinburg, ND” on it.  Of course that was exciting to see.

Fred and Dorothy Hall left yesterday for Las Vegas to celebrate a milestone birthday for Dorothy.  Dorothy said they went there because “What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas”!!  Ruth and Greg Hall also left yesterday.  Greg had planned a surprise Alaskan Cruise for the two of them to celebrate their 35th Wedding Anniversary. Ruth started making many plans to fill up the month of June so Greg finally had to let her in on his “get-away” adventure.  Very romantic.  Everyone who has ever taken an Alaskan cruise says the scenery is breath-taking and would love to do a return visit.  I know they will have a wonderful time.

Ruth and Greg will get back just in time to pack again and head to Red Lodge, MT along with  Dave and Loretta and Chuck and myself for a Monson Cousin Reunion.  We coincided our reunion with a “Hog” gathering that weekend.  Ruthie, Loretta and I will probably come back to Edinburg with tattoos, leathers and an order to the Harley-Davidson company for bikes.

Norma Gire fell about 10 days ago and broke her hip.  She is now in swing-bed in Breckenridge, MN.  Her daughter, Linda lives in Wahpeton so she is close by.  I keep Norma in my thoughts and prayers as I know she loved being in her home in Edinburg.  Also, Jif Heskin, Pastor Erik’s wife is really having a tough, tough time with her back.  She is in constant pain and is having trouble getting the proper medical treatment to help the problem.  Thoughts and prayers are with you Jif.

Heartfelt sympathy goes to the family of Donald Johansen.  Donnie’s funeral was last Monday.  Donnie’s daughter, Mary said he enjoyed reading the “Crow’s Nest” as she would print it out for him.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as it is never; ever easy to lose someone we love.

Have a great week---and Wanda, I am SO glad Clinton showed you the Edinburg website.  I am twice as glad that you really enjoyed it!  It is great to have readers in Fargo.  Talk with you later.

125th CELEBRATION INFORMATION:

A contest is being held for people to submit logo ideas for our 125th celebration next summer.  The deadline is July 20th for submissions.  Please use all your creative "juices" to come up with a logo that will symbolize Edinburg.  A $50 prize will be given to the winning entry.  The entries will be voted on at our Community meeting July 27th.  Please email your entries to me at omaopa@polarcomm.com  or mail them to Box 66, Edinburg.

We are excited about our up-coming party next summer.

Useful or useless information-----

Pinch back some of the flowers on your pepper plants so the plants expend energy producing larger fruit.

In July of 1893, the first 18-hole golf course in America was laid in Wheaton, IL.

Give carrots a twist when you pull them up so the stems don't break.

To add great flavor and aroma to your grilled meats, toss rosemary sprigs on the coals the last 10 minutes of grilling time.

To get Fido to take a pill, put the pill in a piece of cheese or hotdog and he will gobble it up!
