THE CROW’S
NEST----------------August

Marilyn
Hagerty wrote in her Grand
Forks Herald column this
past week that we won’t be
saying “good-bye” to summer
as we never said “hello”!!
How very true that is. This
has truly been an unusually
cool summer. I don’t know
if the tomatoes will ripen
before the first frost. I
do know that our garden
lettuce has grown
beautifully because of the
low temperatures. I also
know we are getting tired of
eating it every night!
We have had 2-3 days of
warm sunshine. The grain
fields are slowly ripening
and the sunflowers are
starting to bloom. The
garden vegetables are slow
to mature. I usually have
50 quarts of dill pickles
canned by this time of the
year. So far I have only
done 13 quarts. Maybe this
is a good way to start
thinking about cutting back
on the size of our garden
patch. There is always the
option of buying pickles at
Market On Main!
School starts next week in
Edinburg. Time just seems
to zip by so fast. Mary
Langerud has been busy
planning out the menus for
the school meal program. I
am sure Melvin Obie has been
in high gear also getting
everything ready for that
first day of school.
The sure sign of autumn is
Trinity Lutheran’s Annual
Turkey Supper. It is
scheduled for September 16th.
That day is rapidly
approaching. There is lots
of preparation that goes in
to the supper, but is well
worth the effort. We have
been serving around 500
people each year. Most of
us have had the same “job”
for many years, so
everything seems to go like
clock-work. The only
downside is we all are
getting a bit older so
everything seems to take
more time and effort to get
things done. O well, no one
goes away hungry.
What a fun, fun night we
had in Edinburg last
Wednesday. The UND Tour Bus
came to town. Each year UND
plans a 3 day tour either in
the northern half or the
southern half of the state
for the new faculty
members. This provides a
chance for them to “see”
what North Dakota is all
about. Fortunately for us,
the tour group ended this
year’s jaunt by hosting an
evening meal for area UND
graduates and members of the
community at the Edinburg
Community Center. Bernice
Flanagan did a marvelous job
of coordinating the event.
She also was a great Master
of Ceremonies! President
and Mrs. Kelly were on the
tour bus along with the new
faculty members of UND. It
was great fun visiting with
everyone and to see how very
diverse the group was.
Edinburg’s main street was
all polished up and at its
finest. The group seemed to
be very impressed with our
little town.
Chuck and I were supposed to
be on a cruise ship to
Alaska today, but we had to
cancel the trip until next
spring. I know young love
is wonderful, but I have
come to realize there is
nothing like “old love” to
see one through times of
trials and such. Chuck has
had to really step up and
take care of lots of issues
related to my mastectomy and
rheumatoid arthritis. What
a comfort 45 years of
marriage has been. I feel
very, very blessed by it
all.
Lots of people are or have
traveled recently. Harold
and Alida Flom are cruising
the Alaskan waters. David
and Loretta Monson recently
returned from the Nevada
with stops in Utah and
Wyoming. Ruth Hall and
Beverley Hall along with
Jodi (Hall) Crockett and 2
of her children, Jase and
Halle just came back from
Boise, ID where they visited
John and Connie Simpson and
family and Vera Brandvold is
home from Colorado.
Everyone said they had a
grand time. Sylvia Lowe is
here visiting her sister,
Dolly Halvorson of Park
River. They have come to
Edinburg for church Sunday
mornings.
A huge thank you to Janne
and Christian Myrdal for the
beautiful bouquet of
wildflowers they brought me
last Saturday evening. They
were beautiful! Janne left
Sunday for Oslo, Norway to
be with her mom.
Have a great day and we will
talk later.
