 The Crow's Nest

THE CROW’S NEST-----------------July 15,  2010

Last Tuesday morning I had a “front row seat” at a most spectacular event.  As I started my daily 5:30 AM trek, I was treated to an awesome and brilliant sunrise.  The eastern sky was painted in the most vivid hues of red.  What a view for the beginning of a new day!!

Weather warnings had been posted so I decided NOT to plug in my ear buds.  The beauty and the quietness of the morning heightened all my senses.  I listened to mourning doves coo, cows low and my walking shoes clip-clop on the pavement.  Even the smells of Gayland Steffers wood burning stove, freshly cut grass and the fuel of passing gravel trucks seemed enhanced.  What a wonderful way to begin the day.  A life lesson was learned also:  I do not need to have music blaring in my ears to make my daily morning walks enjoyable.

Tuesday afternoon in to early Wednesday morning a big part of North Dakota experienced very stormy weather.  Homes were damaged and trees uprooted in many communities.  Hail was also a big factor in many areas.  Fortunately the Edinburg community was spared from the worst of the storms.  We received a little more than an inch of much needed rain.  My walk Wednesday morning was great as everything smelled SO fresh and alive.

Last Saturday morning Tom Mullen and Jim Olafson took off on their motorcycles for a cruising trip to Glacier National Park and then in to Idaho to visit the city of Wallace where Tom spent time as a child.  Jim said they were going to take some back roads to avoid all the Interstate traffic.  I am sure they are having a wonderful time enjoying the beauty of our country.

It was so much fun to have Russell and Susan Sveen and children Madison and Erik here visiting.  They came to spend time with Russell’s mom, Runa who resides at Borg in Mountain and Randy who lives on the homeplace.  Russell and Susan live in Indiana.  They are faithful visitors every year.

Our café is closing July 24th.  It is sad, but inevitable I guess.  Frank and Marlene Anderson have been serving us for the last couple of years.  It is hard to keep a venue going when business is lacking.  Chuck and I have gone down to the café every morning for breakfast along with Mike Olafson.  Most mornings it is just the 3 of us.  The men’s prayer breakfast and the women’s bible study from Trinity Lutheran meet there every week, but that is not enough to keep the business viable.  It is sad.  I guess I will have to re-learn how to make breakfast and noon lunch!!  I wish Frank and Marlene the best.  They are staying in the area so that is a good thing.

A very warm welcome to Jan (Myrdal) Morrell and her husband to Edinburg.  They recently purchased the “Bill Melstad” home from Mark Nelon.  Jan and her husband have lived in Georgia for a number of years, but according to Mike Olafson they now have moved to Memphis, Tennessee.  Edinburg is a place to kind of “hang their hats” during the summer months.  It is great to have you here.

A very happy birthday to Norma Gire who now resides in Wahpeton.  Also, we had a sharp-shinned hawk in our yard today.  It was quite a bird to look at.  The problem is he/she is looking for newborn little birds.  The hawk settles in on a high evergreen branch ready to dive for prey whenever it is possible.

I saw Steve and Cheri Stabo and Wayne and Barb Brandvold leave town pulling their campers.  Barb said they were spending a week at the lakes in Minnesota.  They will have a wonderful time!

Have a great day and we will visit later.  Don’t forget the rib cook-off this weekend.
